West North Africa-Canarias
The Canarias Islands are a great destination to practice or learn kitesurfing. But not on all the islands! Fuerteventura and Tenerife are the best islands for kiteboarding.
Indeed, the spots are much more suitable in Fuerteventura (in the south in Sotavento or in the north of the island in Corralejo) and in Tenerife (in El Medano). It also possible to kite on other islands like Lanzarote (in Famara with an onshore wind) or Gran Canaria (Vargas and Pozo) but the spots overall are much more technical and reserved for experienced kiters (the wind can be totally offshore in Famara, the wind can be very strong in Pozo Izquierdo).
The trade winds blow regularly over the Canaries between May and September, it is the best period for kitesurfing in the archipelago. But Fuerteventura and Tenerife offer kiting conditions all year round, especially for kiting in the waves. The climate in the Canarias is pleasant all year round, we often talk about the islands of eternal spring! The color of the water is truly amazing and the landscapes are always wonderful.
Best kitesurfing spots in Tenerife: Cabezo, bay of El Medano. Best kitesurfing spot in Lanzarote: Famara Best kitesurfing spots in Fuerteventura: Sotavento (south) and spots to the north on the Corralejo side (Flag beach, Glass beach, Cotillo lagoon, Cotillo beach, Majanicho). Best time for kitesurfing in the Canaries is May to September for the constant wind, but the Canaries offer kiting conditions all year round and very pleasant air and water temperatures even in winter.
