Tarifa, Spain
The Tarifa region is one of the most famous and well-known in Europe, due to the strength and statistics of the wind, the diversity of the spots and the kite industry that has developed there. Many pro kiters live there. Tarifa is located in the south of Spain, in Andalusia, just a few kilometers from Morocco: such a nice view over Africa!
Tarifa has long sandy beaches, clear water, plenty of wind, a chic and surf atmosphere. It is great even if in high season it can be a bit crowded.
To get there: either you take the plane to Malaga or Seville then rent a car to Tarifa (+/- 2h drive), or you take your car in the far south of Spain!
The wind in Tarifa: there are two very different winds:
the “poniente”: south-westerly wind, it is normally very regular and generally blows from spring to autumn. It is never very strong. This is an ideal wind for progress, which comes from the ocean and can bring nice swell trains.
the “levante”: summer wind oriented North-East to East, more gusty than the poniente, and generally stronger. It comes from the Mediterranean Sea and Africa and flattens the body of water (be careful though because it often gives off offshore wind).
Do not hesitate to check the wind conditions every day to adapt and change spots if necessary.
Water level, you will find everything, depending on the spots, the direction of the wind and the conditions. The levante brings more flat off shore while the poniente can bring superb waves.
The windy period is from April to October, but the ideal is spring or autumn because in July and August it can be crowded.
Good to know: in Tarifa we sail in combi quite often, even in summer because the wind is blowing hard!
When there is no wind, you can surf if there are waves, walking around the pretty town, go hiking, cycling, shopping, and for sure have a drink and enjoy the great restaurants!
