Cabarete, Dominican Republic
Located 40 kilometers (half an hour) from Puerto Plata airport on the north coast of the island in the Dominican Republic, the Cabarete kite spot is the epicenter of the Dominican Republic in terms of wind and kitesurfing.
Indeed, the city provides access to the most famous spots on the island, including Kitebeach and Bozo Beach, which are an extension of Cabarete beach, downwind of the windsurfing area. The beach is huge, lined with coconut palms and restaurants, and overlooks a safe turquoise bay protected by a reef about 500 meters from the shore, on which waves roll up to 3 meters. In the bay, the water is rather choppy due to the onshore orientation of the wind from noon (trade winds often reinforced by thermal). The pros: versatile spot, ideal for freeriding, lots of space, regular and consistent wind, good atmosphere The cons: a lot of visitors in high season
Some more info:
Kitebeach is a few minutes from Cabarete town by motorbike taxi.
For the waves, the most famous spot is a 15 minute taxi ride west of Cabarete on beautiful Encuentro Beach. The waves are much more consistent there but the wind is rather less regular than in Cabarete.
For freestyle experts, go to the La Boca spot where you will find an ultra-flat body of water at the mouth of the Yasica river. It is even possible to come back to Cabarete by downwind from La Boca.
Wind conditions
Best months: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August and December
